As of late, everyone on Instagram is doing the 5 Facts About Me Tag. I thought it’d be fun to bring it over into the blogging community! So here are a few personal facts to get to know me better, and I’ll be tagging some lovely ladies from the InfluenceHer Collective to participate in this tag as well!
1. I’ve moved around…A LOT
Growing up, I’ve lived all over the place. I was originally from Hong Kong, then moved to the Boston area (but that was just for a short time). After that, I lived in a city in New Hampshire and later moved to a smaller town also in NH. That’s where I spent most of my childhood. During my junior year of high school, my family and I made a huge move to California – and I’ve been here ever since! California has been BY FAR my favorite place I’ve lived. I honestly do not plan on leaving unless there’s a really good reason to.
But anyway, I’ve moved around quite a bit! I think I’ve lived in at least 6-7 different houses with my family (And this excludes all the other places I’ve lived on my own during my college years. If I included that, well it’d probably be closer to 10 homes!).
2. I spent 3 months abroad in Europe
During my senior year of college, a few close friends and I spontaneously decided to study abroad in the UK. We had the time of our lives! Our home was at the University of Warwick, and we’d go to classes about 3 days out of the week. Even though we were all mostly in different classes we somehow coordinated our schedules so we didn’t have class on Mondays. That way, we could have a 3 day weekend for traveling!
We ended up going to so many places together! To list them all, they are:
- Venice, Italy
- Rome, Italy
- Edinburgh, Scotland
- Dublin, Ireland
- Copenhagen, Denmark
- Paris, France
- Amsterdam, the Netherlands
- Berlin, Germany
- Barcelona, Spain
This was the best college experience of my life and I highly recommend it for anyone who can do it! I definitely want to go back to Europe someday to visit all the other places I haven’t been yet.
3. I am a huge foodie
One of my favorite pastimes is exploring nearby cities in Orange County and LA for the best food. Almost every weekend, I’m out there trying something new! I also like reviewing all the places I’ve eaten at so I’ll post a bunch of pictures and reviews on Yelp. I’ve been Yelp Elite for 3 years now! (Going for that 5 year so I get the gold profile heheh.)
4. Everything I know now (like blogging, web design, and graphic design) is self-taught
My knowledge of web and graphic design comes from my pre-teen years, when I was obsessed with Neopets and Myspace. I wanted to have the coolest looking guild on Neopets (does anyone remember those?!) and the best Myspace profile out of all of my friends, so I took a lot of time to learn everything I could about HTML and CSS!
Fast forward a couple years, and this knowledge actually becomes really useful once I start blogging. I also had a Tumblr phase, where I was on that dang site 24/7, and I’m glad that I was able to customize Tumblr themes all on my own. Eventually, I even started becoming a theme designer and sharing them with the public. Surprisingly, a LOT of people liked my designs and started using them! Every time I stumbled upon a random person’s Tumblr that was using my theme, it made me so happy. At one point, I even went freelance and did custom themes for people. I was only like 16 years old so it was an awesome source of income for me!
Now fast forward to present day and I actually scored my current marketing job because of my knowledge in graphic and web design. It’s so cool how I turned a hobby and passion into a career. Learning new skills really does pay off!
5. I carry books with me EVERYWHERE
I’m by no means the most avid reader, BUT I do like having books with me pretty much everywhere I go. That way, if I ever get bored or have some time to kill, I’ll always have something to entertain myself. I leave books in my car, my purse, my office, my boyfriend’s room, etc. I also keep quite a few eBooks on my phone’s iBooks app.
Even though I only read a little at a time of each book, I usually end up finishing about 15-20 books a year. I try to make that an intentional goal too, because I read so many books growing up, and I’d like to continue that. Some of my favorite genres are business/self-improvement, fiction, and classics.
6. I’ve been making a new playlist on Spotify every month for the past 4 years
Not sure if this really counts as a fun fact, but I do consider it a quirky habit of mine. Every month, I start a new playlist and add the songs I’m currently really into. I find it really interesting to see how my taste in music changes from month-to-month and from year-to-year!
Here’s an additional fact: I attribute a lot of songs to a particular moment or experience in my life. Music just takes me back to a specific instance in my life. Is that weird? Whenever I hear a song, in my mind I’ll be like “Oh! This is when so-and-so did this”, or “This is the time I went to this place”. I’m not sure if everyone else makes associations to music like I do.
7. Anything arts and crafts is right up my alley
I’ve always been considered an artistic person, even as a child. When I was younger, I was in art clubs in school, and I took studio art lessons on weekends. I don’t do that nowadays, but I do like to have the occasional wine and paint night at home. And I’m always on Pinterest looking at DIY projects I can do! Most of my projects end up looking pretty nice and I like to display them at home, since I do a lot of home decor projects. I also like to do DIY bath and beauty products because they’re fun and easy to make, plus I LOVE natural beauty products!
8. I’m a stationery geek
Always have and always will. I remember as a kid, I would hoard all the cute stationery I could find in boutique shops when I would go back to Hong Kong. That’s the only thing I cared about buying as souvenirs. Everyone knows this too, so I often get nice journals and stationery sets as presents.
I write in journals a lot (I started back in elementary school) and I still have most of them. Sadly, I tossed the ones from my elementary/middle school years because I thought they were too embarrassing (AKA me stalking my crushes), but I’m kicking myself now for not keeping them! At least I still have all my journals from my college years (I think I filled up about 5 or 6 during that time).
Fast forward to present day: I always fall victim to the cute $1 section at Target because they have the most adorable notebooks, writing pads, pens, etc.
9. I plan on starting my own business someday
Don’t know what it’ll be exactly…but I know that my heart is set on creating something for myself and being my own boss. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit even as a kid, and that hasn’t changed much at all.
In my lifetime, I’ve had three different business ventures. My first one was the custom web design business (from fact #4). A year or so later, I launched an online shop selling my handcrafted jewelry and accessories. (Fun fact: I promoted it to my Tumblr followers and my shop sold out in one day. I was not expecting that kind of response from my followers and I had to hustle to make a second batch of my entire inventory!) And my last business was an e-commerce store for clothing. I worked with wholesalers to curate products that matched my personal taste and aesthetic! All these businesses were fun and a great learning experience. I’d love to use the knowledge I gained to create a business on a larger scale one day.
10. Once I want to learn something, I won’t stop until I get it
I’m SUPER persistent when it comes to learning new things. When there’s a new skill I want to achieve, I get so passionate about learning it that I won’t stop until I do. I’ll immerse myself in online tutorials, Youtube videos, and hours of practice.
For example, last year I was really into the look of modern calligraphy or “brush lettering”. I sat down and practiced writing words over and over again until I was finally able to get it right. Let me tell you, it didn’t come naturally. It looked HORRIBLE at first, but I just kept writing and writing until one day it somehow clicked and started to look amazing! I truly believe that if I want to learn something badly enough, I will get it with a little hard work and effort.
Hope these facts were (at least somewhat) interesting and you get to know me better! Now, I’m tagging Morgan of Atlantic Anchors, Sam of F-Perfection, Lisette of Street Stride, Ash of the Ash Tree Journal, Desiree of Desire-Plus-a-E, Kaitlin of The Curious Lemon, Dana of The Whisper Box, Jess of the Foreign Room, and Kelly of Mongan Moments to do this challenge as well! And of course, I tag YOU if you’re reading this and also want to participate. 🙂
